Distinguished Conduct Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry. Though badly wounded, he continued to direct the construction of a strong point, under heavy shell fire, after his officer and N.C.O.'s had been wounded.'

Lance-Sergeant John McRae, son of Mr and Mrs John McRae, of
Granite Rock, Bairnsdale, was killed in action in France on the 17th
April, 1917, He was a native of Meredith, and was within two
months of being 42 years of age. He enlisted at Melbourne on the
1st August, 1915. He was awarded the distinguished conduct medal for gallant conduct and devotion to duty on the battlefield in France in
October, 1916.
