Son of John Ibsertson Cooper and Margaret Cooper nee Hartley of Dryburgh Street, North Melbourne, Victoria later of 'Ecila', Railway Street, Thornbury, Victoria. John served in the 4th Light Horse Regiment returning to Australia on 20 December 1916

On the 3 July 1919 Hartleyy married Elizabeth Wise in St. Gabriels Church of England, Pimlico, England. Vicar C.S. Norton officiated

Caommenced return to Australia on 21 December 1919 aboard HT Port Napier disembarkng on 10 February 1920
