Robert Oscar on Rangeville Honour Board

The Brisbane Courier, Monday 9 April 1917 page 9
HONOUR BOARDS. TOOWOOMBA. April 8.
At the Rangeville School Garden Fete yesterday afternoon Mr. R. H. Roe, M. A. (Inspector General of Schools) unveiled an honour board which bore the names of a number of former pupils of the school. During this period of the Empire's crisis he said sacrifices had to be made by all. "Our duty," Mr. Roe added, is to bear cheerfully and willingly any burdens which the State or the Federal Government may feel are necessary for the prosecution of the war and for the achievement of victory. At this time public men of all parties should put aside paltry and petty political principles and throw themselves whole heartedly into the one great cause of saving the Empire and preserving on earth the principles of freedom, of righteousness against a tyrannical and brutal oppressor. When the board had been unveiled two of the Rangeville scout buglers played the "Last Post" and two hymns of intercession were sung followed by the National Anthem.
The names on the board are --Gunner W. H. Ebert (killed in action), Pte. William Gillis (killed in action), Thomas, James, and William Rielly (three brothers), Bugler G. Gillis, Pte. F. W. Zirbel, Pte. T. C. Brown, Pte. W. Skerman, Pte. G. Leichney, Sgt. Leslie Boyce, Pte. W. A. Walker, Pte. King Brothers (the first boy to enlist from the school), Pte. O. Flaherty, Trooper W. O. Scott, Pte. T. Connors, Pte. T. Hatton, Sgt. Andrew Scott, Pte. T. Curtis, Pte. R. O. von Steiglitz, (Robert Oscar von Stieglitz). Pte. J. D. Cruickshank, Pte. T. A . Holmes, (killed in action), Pte. H. J. Brown, Pte. H. Pope, Pte. C Hinton, Pte. G. Martin, Pte. R. Cubbin, Pte. A. Walker, Pte. John Pope. Pte. G. Scott, Pte P.A. G. Minz and Pte Hoskin.

Robert Oscar von Stieglitz and my husband's grandfather, Francis Lewis Altmore Thomson (born von Stieglitz) were cousins. Robert's mother Sarah Elizabeth Gordon was the second wife of Oscar Ernest von Stieglitz. In later years the siblings of Robert Oscar dropped the von, to be simply known as Stieglitz.
