9 Mar 1915: Enlisted AIF WW1, Private, 2775, 5th Field Ambulance, Enlisted as Private then promoted to Staff Sergeant while still in Australia to serve with 5th Field Ambulance. Went ashore on Gallipoli circa 19-8-15 then on last barge off Gallipoli. Promoted to Warrant Officer "for good work on Gallipoli" while in Egypt. 1 Apr 1915: Promoted AIF WW1, Sergeant, 5th Field Ambulance, Promoted from Private to Sergeant Dispenser within 5th Field Ambulance, less than a month after joining up.

27 Aug 1916: Promoted AIF WW1, Warrant Officer Class 1, 5th Field Ambulance, Promoted to Warrant Officer "for good work on Gallipoli". Eric was tasked with staying behind with the wounded if Turkish troops overran the Evacuation. His diary entry says he was on the last barge off Gallipoli at 3:45am Dec 20, 1915. AWM says last barge departed at 4:10am.
3 Sep 1917: Promoted AIF WW1, Lieutenant, 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station
20 Jul 1919: Discharged AIF WW1, Lieutenant, 2775, 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Eric returned to Australia on 15-5-1919 and was discharged on20-7-1919. Married Gladys his fiance on 31-3-1920.
