Captain (Capt) John Pritchard, 12th Battalion, a native of Cape Province, South Africa, Capt Pritchard enlisted as 67 Corporal Jethro Bass and embarked with A Company from Hobart on HMAT Geelong on 20 October 1914. Whilst serving at Gallipoli he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and, on attaining the rank of Captain in 1917, revealed his name to be John Pritchard. Following the Armistice, he remained in England to study Accountancy, before returning to Australia on 7 November 1919.
