Andrew Ryan was the son of son of Michael and Mary Ryan, of Nulla Creek, Bellbrook, New South Wales. He was killed by a shell whilst in the reserve trenches near Pozieres, just a night before the 1st Division made their attack on the village.

His younger brother, 974 Pte. John Ambrose Ryan 2nd Battalion AIF was later killed in action 18 September 1918, aged 27.
