Postcards from Robert
When I was a child in Sydney an elderly neighbour gave me some postcards. I have recently found that four of these were from her brother Robert. One was written just four months before he died. It says: (apologies for any errors in reading the handwriting).

I have been expecting to hear from you long ago you seem to have forgotten me altogether.
We have just got an order to get ready to proceed to the front so we will be kept very busy today. I heard that we would be leaving tomorrow.
Well I have just received a letter from you now, so I must withdraw my remarks at the beginning.
It was very kind of Miss Emerson to knit me a pair of mits, which will very probably be delivered by next mail so I will ask you to tender her my sincerest thanks.
I was on leave last W E and went to see Martha. I had a very pleasant time. I was very lucky to get it. Have you got any photos of yourself if you have I would like very much to have one. I mean one taken by yourself.
I would have liked very much to have got home at Xmas but it can't be avoided now. I will try and send you a badge soon.
With love
From Robert
My husband Alan and I have been trying to find relatives of Robert who may be interested in having these postcards. We live in Adelaide and recently travelled to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra to place a poppy on the wall. Our research has found a book written about the Bullecourt Battle and it appears Robert died on the first day of the battle on 11 April 1917.
