Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Alfred William Dodt (Service No:847) enlisted in the AIF on 5 February 1915 and was atatched to 25th Infantry Battalion when he embarked from Brisbane on board HMAT A60 Aeaneas on 29 June 1915. Private Dodt served with the 25th Infantry Battalion in Egypt, Gallipoli, Fler and the Somme. In 1916 Private Dodt was evacuated to England suffering Shell Shock, and embarked from Southampton for Brisbane on 12 September 1916 on board HS Kanowna. Private Dodt was attached to 25th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 17 January 1917.

Born in 1893 in Maryborough QLD, Albert (his NAA Attestation Papers incorrectly recorded him as Alfred) was the second of ten children of Friedrich (Fred) Franz Dodt (b1867 in Lantow, Germany) and Martha Erestina Hoffman (b1874 in Maryborough, QLD). Fred (a Labourer) and Martha married in 1891 in Maryborough, QLD. Fred had immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1873, arriving in Maryborough, QLD on board the Reichstag. Fred had started work at eleven years of age as a Billy Boy, making tea for the drivers of the horse teams taking supplies from Maryborough to the gold mines in Gympie. Fred and Martha settled on a farm at MacIntosh's Creek and later moved to Kandanga where Fred was a Farmer and Labourer.

Albert was a Labourer at Bunya Creek in Kandanga when he enlisted in the AIF, and following his Discharge was a Sawyer at Bunya Creek in 1918 when he married Winifred May Hodge (b1900 in Tiaro, QLD) - Winifred was working in Tiaro as a Waitress. Albert and Winifred settled in Kandanga, where Albert was a Labourer. By 1936 Winifred had left with the children and Albert was living in a slab hut at Harry's Creek in Amamoor and working as a Labourer - according to family anecdotes, Albert never recovered from his experiences in WWI. Albert lived at Glastonbury in the 1940s and 1950s before moving to Brisbane where he died in 1969.
