Henry or Harry Winter was the youngest of four sons of George Powell Winter and Margrett Eveline Winter of Sale, Victoria, who served in WW1. Only one survived.
Henry’s brother Private Walter Robert Winter enlisted with the South African Infantry and served with 4 Regiment. He died of wounds on 14 April 1917 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, south of Boulogne in France. Another brother, Lance Corporal George Ernest Winter is also buried in the same cemetery. He served with the Canterbury Regiment of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and was killed in September 1916.
Herbert George Winter, an older brother, served in the 23rd Battalion AIF and had settled on “Delville Wood” Tuppal Soldier Settlement in Finley, NSW, by 1923. Both parents had died before the war and Herbert as the only surviving male in the family, was awarded the medals of Henry Winter.
