During research for details about J. Leunig 2 names emerged with neither having any obvious connection with the Adelaide Hills region. Therefore I have provided biographical details of both.
Joseph left Melbourne on board the Ulysses on 25 October 1916, reaching Plymouth, England on 25 December. He went to France with the 8th Machine Gun Company on 1 March 1917. A bout of influenza resulted in hospitalisation at University Military Hospital, Southampton, England in June 1917. Joseph rejoined his unit in France on 24 November. He was hospitalised again for 3 weeks in mid-March 1918 due to another bout of influenza. Joseph was hospitalised at Southampton on a second occasion on 18 September with trench fever. He was sent back to Australia on the Demosthenes on 26 July 1919 and discharged on 27 October.
