Died on this date – 22nd April…… Private Arthur Robert Lambert was born at Footscray, Melbourne, Victoria in 1885.
Robert Arthur Lambert married Carol Daphne Daniels in 1906 in Victoria.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 21st February, 1917 as a 30 year old, divorced, Driver from Mordialloc, Victoria.
Private Arthur Robert Lambert, service number 82, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Suevic (A29) on 21st June, 1917 with the 15th Machine Gun Company, 12th Reinforcements. He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital on 6th August, 1917 with a Rash & discharged on 8th August, 1917. Private Lambert disembarked at Liverpool, England on 26th August, 1917.
Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.
He was marched in to 15th Training Battalion at Hurdcott, Wiltshire on 26th August, 1917. He was transferred to 31st Battalion Details on 30th August, 1917. Private Lambert was taken on strength of 31st Battalion from 15th Machine Gun Company at Hurdcott on 20th September, 1917.
On 5th November, 1917 Private Lambert was marched in to 14th Training Battalion at Codford, Wiltshire from 8th Training Battalion at Hurdcott.
Private Lambert proceeded overseas to France via Southampton on 18th December, 1917 to reinforce 42nd Battalion. He was marched in to 3rd A.D.B.D. (Australian Divisional Base Depot) at Rouelles, France on 19th December, 1917. Private Lambert was marched out from 3rd A.D.B.D. on 21st December, 1917 to join his Unit. He was taken on strength of 42nd Battalion in the Field on 27th December, 1917 from Reinforcements.
He was re-allotted a Regimental number of 682A (this would have occurred due to a duplication of numbers).
On 14th April, 1918 Private Lambert reported sick. He was admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance on 14th April, 1918 with Oedema feet & legs. Private Lambert was transferred to 12th Casualty Clearing Station on 14th April, 1918 then transferred & admitted to 11th Stationary Hospital at Rouen, France on 19th April, 1918 with Acute Nephritis. He was invalided to England on Hospital Ship Panama on 20th April, 1918.
He was admitted to University War Hospital, Southampton, England on 21st April, 1918. The Hospital Admissions form recorded: “Onset 14-4-18 France. Arrived in a semi conscious condition….”
Private Arthur Robert Lambert died at 7.40 am on 22nd April, 1918 at University War Hospital, Southampton, England from Nephritis & Bronchitis.
He was buried in Hollybrook Cemetery, Southampton, Hampshire, England where 15 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located.
