Biography

939 Trooper William Cox, 1st Light Horse Regiment, of Henty, Victoria. William Cox embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Bakara. He returned to Australia on 2 January 1919.

"OBITUARY.  Mr. William John Cox

Mr. William John Cox, aged 60, died in the Temora Hospital on 26th June. Mr. Cox was born in Thoona, Victoria, and spent his youth in the Albury district. He enlisted from Henty in the 1914- 18 war and served practically through-out. His regimental number was 939 and he was a member of the First Light Horse and in the first Australian contingent that landed at Gallipoli. He was wounded on active service. On his return from the war he took up a property at Urangeline, but some time afterwards disposed of this to join the staff of the Railway Department as a fettler. In the Department's service he was stationed at Lockhart, Narandera, Condobolin, and then to Henty, finally going to Temora about five years ago. Ill health caused his retirement from the Railway Department this year. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five daughters, Ollie (Mrs. Goodfellow, Albury), Connie (Penrith) Lorraine (Temora), Daphne (Mrs. H. Harpley, Temora), Valerie, (Temora). Two brothers and two sisters also survive, Charles (Woy Woy), Annie (Mrs. De Graves, Newcastle), Edie, (Mrs. Hartley, Lockhart), and Ollie (Albury)." - from the Narandera Argus and Riverina Advertiser 13 Jul 1948 (nla.gov.au)
