Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Corporal Charles Gideon Winter (Service No:7566) enlisted in the AIF in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia on 13 March 1917, and was a Private attached to 11th Infantry Battalion on 29 June 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Fremantle for Plymouth on board HMAT A30 Borda. Promoted to Corporal, he served on the Western Front with 11th Infantry Battalion and, in London was attached to Australian Army Pay Corps. Corporal Winter embarked from England for Fremantle on 6 October 1919, and was attached to Army Pay Corps at Discharge on 24 December 1919. In his Attestation Papers (NAA), Corporal Winter stated he had served in the Boer War. Sons Charles, Noel and John also served in WWI.

Charles was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1865, eldest of two children of John Winter (b1838 in Pembrokeshire, Wales) and Frances Oriel (nee Morris; b1826 in Pembrokeshire, Wales). John (a Cabinetmaker) and Frances (a Grocer and Widow) married in 1864 in Pembrokeshire, and lived there until 1871 when they immigrated with their two sons. John and Frances arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on board the Stonehouse, and lived in Warrnambool before settling in Launceston, Tasmania.

Charles worked as a  Bookseller for Hopwood & Co in Launceston, and in 1893 was a Farmer in Patersonia, Launceston when he married Mary Ada (aka Ada) Sleightholm (b1871 in Launceston, Tasmania) - Ada was a Schoolmistress, starting at Patricks River State School and then Patersonia State School. Charles and Ada settled in Launceston, where Charles was a Farmer, before joining his brother (William) in South Africa, where Charles, according to his Obituary (Trove; 1950) conducted business and fought in the Boer War. Charles and Ada returned to Australia in the early 1900s, and settled in Western Australia where they raised their family and Charles was a Farmer and Orchardist in Kellerberrin (in his Attestation Papers in 1917, Charles gave his address as Boulder and his occupation as Miner). Following his Discharge from the AIF, Charles and Ada lived briefly in Perth, where Charles was a Clerk, before settling in Cookernup via Harvey, where Charles was a Farmer and Orchardist. In the late 1920s Charles and Ada moved to Busselton, and Charles worked as a Supervisor for the Agricultural Bank (Group Settlement Scheme). Ada died in 1945 and Charles in 1950.
