Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 18th May 1917, Private James Augustus Hughes, 55th Battalion (Reg No-4826), labourer from Mosquito Island, Newcastle, New South Wales, was Killed in Action during the Second Battle of Bullecourt, age 32. Cause of death unknown.
No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Watt Street, Newcastle, New South Wales on the 4th November 1884 to James (died 21.3.1929, Waratah, N.S.W., age 77) from Hewison Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales and Maitland Road, Hexham, N.S.W., and Julia Ann Hughes nee Dempsey (died 17.2.1931, Wickham, N.S.W., age 76) from Hewison Street, Tighes Hill, New South Wales and Maitland Road, Hexham, N.S.W. and 21 Union Street, Tighes Hill, N.S.W., James enlisted on the 16th August 1915 with the 3rd Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Star of England on the 8th March 1916.
Admitted to hospital 12.12.1916 (dental).
Unfortunately, no Roll of Honour notices located.
James is resting at Noreuil Australian Cemetery, France. Row H Grave 9.

Mr. Hughes’s name has been inscribed on the Mosquito Island Roll of Honour, whereabouts unknown.
Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription at the Hughes gravesite to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies in remembrance of James’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-B. Spec. 88.

Older brother William B (born 4.2.1881, Newcastle, N.S.W., enlisted in New Zealand on the 15th of November 1916, died?).
