Biography contributed by Helen Harmer

Archibald Arthur Knapton was born in Fremantle on the 25.5.1882. When Archibald enlisted in Perth on the 16.11.15, he was aged 33 years 8 months, a porter with the Railways and Presbyterian.  He was described as being 5 feet 5¾ inches tall, with a chest measurement of 37-39½ inches, fresh complexion, hazel eyes and light brown hair. His postal address was the Railway Station, North Fremantle. Both his parents were dead, so next of kin was his brother George Ernest Knapton, address unknown and his sister Mrs Maud McCleery of Edward St, Osborne Park, who was an invalid. There had been another brother in South Africa, not heard of for 18 years. In 1920 Maud moved to 92 Shakespear St Mt Hawthorn. Archibald was appointed a Private with Service number 1951 in the 44th Infantry Battalion and embarked on the 20.7.16 on the Seeang Bee from Fremantle. He proceeded to France on the 25.11.16 and had a stay in hospital with diarrhoea on 20.1.17. On the 30.7.1917 at the beginning of the Third Battle of Ypres, in Belgium, Archie was killed in action by German shellfire and has no known grave. He is memorialised at Ypres (Menin Gate) on panel 27. The Legatees of his will were the Trustees of Scots Church, Fremantle, the Rev Robert Hanlin and others. Patrick William Dohaty was the executor. His personal effects, 2 discs, a Testament, 2 books of views, cards, unit colours and wallet were returned to his sister.
