Allan Ross was born in Bracknell, Tasmania, in 1874, to his mother Cecilia Ross. Not much is known about his earlier life. He enlisted in World War 1 in the 28th of March 1916, at the old age of 41, having previously being rejected for varicose veins. In his service he was immediately transferred to the 43rd Battalion, but was repeatedly troubled by his varicose veins and sent to hospital on multiple occaisions. He returned to Australia on the 19th October 1918, later being discharged on the grounds of being medically unfit, being issued the British War Medal and the Victory Medal, in January 1919.
