Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Harry was the sixth of nine children of Thomas Joynson (born 1858 in Cheshire, England) and Mary Jane Grant (Born 1859 in Staffordshire, England). Thomas - a Coal Miner - and Mary married in 1879 in Staffordshire, where they lived until moving to Lancashire in 1895. In 1909 Thomas and Mary immigrated  to Australia (their eldest son had immigrated in 1907), arriving in Brisbane, QLD on board the Osterley. They settled at Howard in Wide Bay, QLD where Thomas worked as a Miner.

Harry was fifteen years of age when he arrived in Australia, and went to work as a Miner with his father and some of his brothers. In February 1916 Harry enlisted in the AIF and served as a Private and Sapper (Service No:3312) with 1st Tunnelling Coy. Harry was WiA in France in March 1918 - Lieutenant J H Bate wrote in his report 'Some were feeling sick and others developed sickness, and soreness of the eyes on the road back to camp' (National Archives Australia).

Discharged in July 1919, Harry returned to Howard in QLD and in 1925 was working as a Miner when he married Emilie Agnes Strehlau (born 1895 at Yengarie in QLD). Harry and Emilie settled at Howard in QLD where Harry continued working as a Miner. He died in 1966 and Emilie in 1969.
