Biography: John Wilhelm Janson (Service number: 100)

John Janson was born in Stockholm, Sweden. John’s occupation before joining was as a seaman. At the time of enlistment he found himself working and living in South Australia.

John enlisted on the 6th of January 1916. On the 24th of January John was sent to A.I.F. camp. On the 7th of March that John Janson was transferred to the 43rd Battalion as a private. After about 3 months of training at Morphettville, John embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT Afric on the 9th of June 1916 to England for further training. John embarked with the 43rd Battalion overseas to France on the 25th of November 1916. While in France John committed two crimes, both for breaking curfew. On the 26th of May 1917 John was detached from the 43rd battalion to join the engineers. On the 4th of June 1917 John was detached from the engineers to Musketry school. Then on the 18th of June John rejoined the 43rd battalion. He continued to serve with this unit for the rest of 1917 and much of 1918.

John went to England on leave on the 17th of March 1918 and rejoined the 43rd battalion on the 4th of June. On the 20th of June 1918 John as sent to hospital sick. On the same day John was admitted to hospital with myalgia. John used H.T. or hired transport to get to Rouen, Northern France on the 30th of June 1918. On the 3rd of July 1918, John was admitted to Birmingham, England with severe myalgia.

Before going to the war John was a single man. But on the 19th of October 1918 everything changed, John got married. He got married at the age of 42 to Elspith Mamie Thomson who was at the time 27 years old.

On the 16th of July 1920, John disembarked in Australia. After a long time serving, John served a total of 4 years, 6 months and 10 days from the day he enlisted to the day he was disembarked. It was a long journey John finally got to go home.
