He was 21 and the son of Mrs. Ethel Symons, of 8, Wilder Rd., Ilfracombe, Devon, England, and the late George Sanders, late of High Street, Ilfracombe.

He is remembered on the Ilfracombe War Memorials-the town of his birth.

Births Dec 1896  Sanders Jack Barnstaple 5b 453.

He is one of two Australian soldier casualties of the Great War who are honoured on both Ilfracombe War Memorials, the other being  Company Sergeant Major Frederick Malcolm Thomas Service Number 2016 of the 17th Battalion, Australian Infantry. Son of John and Louisa Thomas. Born in Kingsbridge in 1890. Died 27 February 1917 aged 27. (He worked a farm on his own at Chambercombe before he left for Australia.)

ILFRACOMBE WAR MEMORIAL-Grade II This memorial is protected, and listed on the National Heritage List for England maintained by Historic England.

Bronze figure of Victory surmounting a Tuscan column and granite plinth, on a two stepped base. There are brass plaques with names for the First World War on the sides of the plinth, and the main dedication is laid with lead lettering on the front face of the upper base.
