Ernest was the eldest of eight children of John Richards (born 1863 in Glamorgan, Wales) and Louisa Ellen Lancaster (born 1872 in Ipswich, QLD).
Ernest was a Telephone Mechanic in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF in Toowoomba, QLD. He served with the 9th and 69th Infantry Battalions and was WIA on three occasions - his leg was amputated following the final injury, a GSW to his thigh. He was shot in the neck and gassed by mustard gas.
Ernest returned to Ipswich, QLD following his Discharge in 1919, where he worked as a Telephone Mechanic and in 1919 married Margaret May Troundell. Between the Wars, Ernest worked as a Telephone Mechanic in Bulimba, QLD, until he enlisted as a Signalman (Service No: Q155102) with 1 Lines of Communication Signals.
Ernest worked as a Telephone Mechanic until he retired in 1963

Ernest's wife, Margaret May Trousdell was a Teacher in Toowoomba, QLD until their marriage in 1919
