Son of Frederick Matthews and Elizabeth MARCHANT, Clifton Avenue, Clifton Hill, Victoria
Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital from Sutton Veny Military Hospital suffering with Hammer toe left 31 August 1917 and discharged 08 September 1917.
Proceeded to France 13 January 1918
Admitted to hospital sick 20 February 1918 and transferred to England and admitted to Boscombe Miltiary Hospital suffering with Trench Feet. Four days later he was transferred to the 1st Auxiliary Hospital where he spent nearly two months and was discharged 14 May 1918.
Proceeded to France 16 August 1918
Wounded in action 25 August 1918 and admitted to Lines of Communication Hospital and transferred to England and admitted to 5th Southern General Hospital suffering from the effects of gas.
He was charged with Breaking out of hospital 23 September 1918 and awarded forfeit of 2 days pay for the offence.
Left England 20 December 1918 for return to Australia per Hospital Transport 'Orontes'.
Arrived in Melbourne with Gas Poisoning 30 January 1919 and was discharged from AIF 01 March 1919.
