He was 24 and the son of Michael and Eliza Ryan, of St. Mullens, County Carlow, Ireland. His mother also lived at  Upper Drana, Glynn, County Carlow, Ireland.

Private Michael Ryan was born in Dranagh, Saint Mullins, County Carlow, Ireland in 1892.
His parents were Michael Ryan (1860–1935) and Elizabeth "Eliza" Foley (1860–1941).

His parents had the following children:
