'HEROES OF THE DARDANELLES.
MANLY, October 19.
A pleasant ceremony took place at the Manly State School this afternoon. Private M. Watkins, a returned wounded soldier, who was formerly on the teaching staff, visited the school, and gave an interesting address on the war at Gallipoli, at the close of which Miss Vera Shaw, on behalf of the senior classes of the school, presented their former teacher with a smoker's outfit. Mr Radcliffe on behalf of the children, thanked Private Watkins for his interesting address. Private Watkins promised to continue the address on next Friday afternoon. Private Watkins is a son of the head teacher, Major Watkins and has two brothers with the Expeditionary Forces.' from The Brisbane Courier 20 Oct 1915 (nla.gov.au)
'A RECRUITING OFFICER.
Sergt. Watkins, a returned wounded soldier, of the Light Horse, who was in the fighting at Lone Pine, has been detailed as recruiting officer for the Kingaroy Shire (says the "Herald"). He arrived during the week, and will begin his work under the direction of the recruiting sub-committee of the District War Council. Sergt. Watkins comes originally from the Rosewood district, and many residents in these parts will be glad to renew acquaintance with him. Mr. R. S. Hodge writes that he has known him intimately since boyhood, and he commends him to the good treatment of the Kingaroy people. Sergt . M. Watkins is a son of Major Watkins, formerly a State school teacher in charge at Rosewood, but now head teacher of the Manly State School.' from Queensland Times 26 Jan 1916 (nla.gov.au)
