Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 16th April 1918, Private George Maurice Davies, 4th Battalion (Reg No-6262), farmer from Junee, New South Wales, was Killed in Action near Strazeele, a French village not far from the Belgian border, age 33. Cause of death unknown.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Junee, New South Wales about 1885 to Maurice (Morris) Howard (died 20.9.1917, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 57), from "Carlingford", Hunter Street, Merewether? or Newcastle West, New South Wales, and Maggie (Margaret) Finlay (Finley) Davies nee Anderson (died 19.5.1938, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 79), from "Carlingford", Hunter Street, Merewether? or Newcastle West, New South Wales and the corner of Hunter and Burwood Streets, Merewether, N.S.W., George enlisted on the 6th April 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A14 Euripides on the 9th September 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 26.10.1916.

Admitted to hospital 18.6.1917 (deafness).

Granted leave to England from 9.2.1918 to 19.3.1918.

Mr. Davies is resting at Outtersteene Communal Cemetery Extension, Bailleul, France. Plot II Row F Grave 9.

Place of Association - Junee, New South Wales, Australia.

George’s name has been inscribed on the Junction Soldiers' Monument, Junee Cenotaph and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Davies gravesite in remembrance of George’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-04. 109.
