Ernest was born at Summertown and went to Uraidla School. He enlisted on 15 February 1915 in the base depot infantry and was transferred to the 27 th Battalion on 6 April 1915.
He sailed on the HMAT Geelong A2 for Egypt where he proceeded to join M.E.F. on the Gallipoli Peninsula. He received severe gunshot wounds to his shoulder and back on 21 September 1915 and transferred to No. 16 Clearing Station whereupon he was transferred two days later to the hospital and disembarked at Malta on 2 October 1915. He was admitted to the hospital ship Salta and travelled to England, arriving at Southern Hospital Birmingham on 15 November 1915.
After medical attention, he rejoined his unit on 9 March 1916 but was admitted to No. 26 General Hospital Etaples on 21 May 1916. He then rejoined his unit on 1 July 1916 but was killed in action on 4 August 1916 at Pozieres.
