John joined the 16th Battalion 4th Machinegun Company and left Melbourne on HMAT A 40 Ceramic on 22 December 1914. He fought at Gallipoli. During action at Courtney’s Post on August 6 1915 John suffered poor vision. At Pozieres, France on 8 August 1916 he was blown up and sustained a wound to his hand. This resulted in John being unable to get around at night unaided. His left knee was tender and painful on walking. He was unable to walk any distance without a stick {Medical report 23 August 1918}. John was diagnosed to be suffering nyctalopia - night blindness.
He was appointed Corporal on 11 April 1916 and promoted Lieutenant on 25 December 1917. John was returned to Australia on the Kenilworth Castle on 12 March 1918 for discharge due to nyctalopia, having undergone treatment at London General Hospital, Wandsworth. He was classed as medically unfit on 6 June 1918.
