Enlisted and served under alias David Conroy

Biography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon

He is commemorated on the  new Retford Great War Memorial on Nottingham’s Victoria Embankment  as Abraham Isaac Levene.

His place of birth is uncertain-his family, when completing the Final Verification Papers for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, stated that he had been born in Russia whereas, upon attestation, David [Abraham] declared he had been born in Glasgow.

His age is also unclear-his parents stated he was 20 when killed but other sources indicate he was 22 when embarking for Egypt.

He saw service in Egypt prior to serving in Gallipoli.

He was 20 and the son of Samuel and Janey Levene, 32 Uppingham Terrace, Waterway Street, Nottingham, England.
