Gerald was the second of five children of John William Palmer (b1860 in York, WA) and first wife Gertrude Stephanie Monger (b1867 in York, WA). John (a Farmer) and Gertrude married in 1891 in York WA where they raised their family. Following Gertrude's death in 1899, John remarried (Ann Christina Todd; b1879 in Sydney, NSW) in 1901 and had a further six children.

Gerald was a Farmer in York, WA when he enlisted in the AIF in April 1917. He served as a Private/Trooper (Service No:3539) with 10th Light Horse Regiment in Egypt and was Discharged in July 1919.

Returning to York, WA Gerald married Minnie Geraldine Robinson (b1896 in Menzies WA) in August 1920. The couple were in York before moving to Jarrahdale in the late 1920's where Gerald was a Farmer and Grazier. In the 1903s they moved to Maylands in Perth where Gerald worked as an Assurane Salesman. 

Gerald served with the ACMF in WWII (Captain; Service No:W237563). He and Minnie settled in Perth where Gerald worked as an Assurance Officer and Area Manager. He died in 1976 and Minnie in 1977.
