My Great Uncle

My Great Uncle

I never met my Great Uncle James Codona Thomson (his name is recorded on his Australian Imperial Army documents as James Codona Thompson). Great Uncle James was born in Tranent Scotland. He had heard Australia was the land of opportunity. Long story short James arrived in Sydney New South Wales on June 2nd 1913. He travelled by train to Brisbane then onto Gympie. James worked on “Fraser’s Station” here he learnt to ride horses, muster cattle & crack a whip. C.1914 James travelled down to Brisbane, then to “Bald Hills” northwest of Brisbane. Records show James Codona Thompson joined the Australian Imperial Forces at Enoggera, Brisbane, Queensland on the 7 April 1915. Members Number: 420. Rank: PTE. Unit: 26 Battn. Great Uncle James returned to Australia to recover from injuries he had suffered. 1921 Great Uncle James booked passage on the SS Themistocles to return to England and his sweet heart, they married and had 3 children.
