Son of Thomas O'Neill and Catherine O'Neill of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Prior to coming to Australia John had served with the Gordon Highlanders for sixteen years

Husband of Mary Ann O'Neill nee Moran of Longpocket, Indooroopilly, QLD. John and Mary married on 27 August 1911 in Brisbane, QLD.

Commenced return to Australia on 1 February 1918 aboard HT Balmoral Castle disembarking on 28 March 1918 at Sydney for onward travel overland to Brisbane.
