Died on this date - 20th September....Private George Hamilton was born at Killyman, Dungannon, Co. Tyrone, Ireland.
According to information supplied by his sister for the Roll of Honour – George Hamilton came to Australia when he was 31 years of age.
George Hamilton enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 8th August, 1915 stating he was a 29 year old Grocer from North Sydney, NSW. He embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 31st March, 1916 with the 13th Infantry Battalion, 16th Reinforcements.
Private Hamilton embarked from Alexandria on 7th June, 1916 on H.M.T. Ionian to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) arrived in France on 14th June, 1916 & had been appointed Acting Corporal from 7th June, 1916.
Acting Corporal George Hamilton joined 13th Battalion in France on 25th August, 1916 & revered to the rank of Private.
Private George Hamilton was wounded in action in France on 30th August, 1916. He was invalided to England with a fractured right arm & shrapnel wounds to left ankle & admitted to 2nd Eastern General Hospital, Brighton, England on 2nd September, 1916.
Private George Hamilton died on 20th September, 1916 from wounds received in action in France - fractured humerus, amputation of arm & Septicaemia. (Note: there is some discrepancy as to which Hospital he died in)
Private George Hamilton was buried Welford Road Cemetery, Leicester, Leicestershire, England where 7 other WW1 Australians are buried.
