Biography

NOONAN Timothy Francis 3433 PTE
57th Battalion
1891-1917

Timothy Francis - Taddy - as he was known to his family, was the second son to enlist on 2 October 1915, just 11 months after Mathew joined up. Both his parents, John and Catherine (Sivyer) had died so he named his eldest brother James as his next of kin. Taddy, born in 1891 at Tamleugh, was 24 years old.

He was initially posted into the 59th Battalion when he embarked from Melbourne for Egypt. On 26 February 1916 he was taken on strength of the 57th Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir. The Battalion had only been raised a week. Half its components were Gallipoli veterans from the 5th Battalion, while the other half consisted of fresh reinforcements from Australia, which included Taddy.

On 17 June the 57th Battalion embarked from Alexandria aboard HT Transylvania for Marseilles where it arrived a week later.

In March Taddy was hospitalised with a severe nasal infection after which he had 14 days leave.   This was followed by two months of training at Perham Downs, returning to his unit on 9 July 1917.

Two months later during the Battle of Polygon Wood Taddy was killed. He is buried at Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium.
