Thomas was the son of Thomas Owen and Edith Mary Jones of Melrose.  Arthur attended the Melrose State School and was described as an all round athlete, a member of the local Methodist Church and was popular among a large circle of friends.   Arthur died of wounds received while storming a pill-box at Flers on October 6, 1917 aged 20 years and 10 months and is buried at the Nine Elms British Cemetery, Poperinghe, Belgium.
