With his three older brothers (Lionel, George and Sydney), Private William Hamilton Gordon (Service No:3030) served in WWI, enlisting in the AIF on 22 May 1915. He was attached to 10th Infantry Battalion on 2 September 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Suez on board HMAT A68 Anchises. Private Gordon served in Egypt, Lemanos Island, France and Belgium (NAA) with 50th Infantry Battalion and 13 Machine Gun Coy, and was attached to 4th Machine Gun Battalion on 5 April 1919 when he embarked from London for Adelaide on board HT Warwickshire. Private Gordon was attached to 4th Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 18 July 1919.

Fourth of six children, William was born in Carrieton, South Australia in 1892 to George Carlyle Gordon (b1861 at Beautiful Valley, South Australia) and Amy Susannah Howe (b1866 in Chinkford, Gilbert, South Australia). George and Amy married in 1884 in Hammond, and lived there and in Carrieton, Balaklava and Port Lincoln, where they raised their family and George was a Blacksmith and Inventor (patented a winnowing and grain cleaning macchine).

William worked as a Blacksmith in Port Lincoln before enlisting in the AIF in 1915. Following his Discharge, William joined the South Australian Police on 1 October 1919 as a Police Constable in Adelaide where, in 1922, he married Gladys Irene Homburg (b1896 in Stepney, South Australia). William and Gladys lived in Iron Knob, Largs Bay and Adelaide, where they raised their family and William was a Policeman - Mounted Constable. In 1941 William was in Melbourne, where he was a Munutions Worker with the Department of Munitions until his death in 1948. Gladys died in 1980.
