Herbert was one of the three sons of Harry Robert and Sarah Owen, of New Town, Tasmania, who all enlisted in the 12th Infantry Battalion. He was known as ‘Roy’ to his family and friends.
His brother 6847 Pte Archie Walter Owen died from wounds 23rd July 1918 and was buried in the Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France.
Another brother 3326 Pte Reginald Tudor Owen was invalided back to Tasmania with a gunshot wound to the right foot and a fractured left ankle.
