Lance Corporal Charles Henry Turner (Service No:285) enlisted in the AIF on 4 March 1916 attached to 40th Infantry Battalion. Private Turner embarked with his Unit from Hobart for Devonport on 1 July 1916 on board HMAT A35 Berrima. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 8 November 1917, he served in France and Flanders with 40th Infantry Battalion and embarked from England for Melbourne on 30 April 1919 on board HT Karagola. Lance Corporal Turner was attached to 40th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 18 August 1919. Three of his siblings also served in WWI - George, and Lionel and Frank (who were both KiA). Three of his sons - William, Lionel and James - served in WWII.

Charles was born in Carrick, Tasmania in 1883, fourth of eleven children of John Charles Turner (b1852 in Port Fairy, Victoria) and Sarah Elizabeth Smith (b1853 in New Norfolk, Tasmania). In 1877 in Longford, Tasmania, John (a Labourer) and Sarah (a Dressmaker) married, and lived in Rosedale, Carrick, Westbury and Launceston where they raised their family and John was a Labourer. By 1919 John and Sarah had moved to Melbourne, Victoria where John was a Cook.

Charles completed a four year apprenticeship to H J McEwan - Baker) in Longford, before working in Launceston as a Driver. In 1905 in Launceston he married Jane Agnes Milne (b1883 in Stamford, Victoria). Charles and Jane lived in Carrick and Launceston where Charles worked as a Labourer before enlisting in the AIF. Following his Discharge, Charles and Jane settled in Launceston where they raised their family and Charles was a Driver. Jane died in 1951 and Charles in 1957.
