Biography contributed by John Oakes

Victor Roy JOHNSTON was born on 10th January 1894 at Bowral. He commenced working for the NSW Government Railways as a junior clerk at Darling Harbour on 15th September 1913. He remained in that role for his whole career. He was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces on 16th August 1914. Victor Johnston (Service Number 139) enlisted at Sydney on 17th August 1914, giving his ‘trade or calling’ as ‘clerk’, and his age as 21 years. This age would seem to be a slight exaggeration as by the birthdate on his railway record card he would only have been 20 years and 7 months.  He served in the 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion.

Johnston was not married and gave his father as his next of kin.

He was taken on the strength of 3rd Battalion on Gallipoli on 7th May 1915, a couple of weeks after the first landings.

He was killed in action at Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli Peninsula, on 15th June 1915. He was buried by Captain McKenzie in the Beach Cemetery.

He is now buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Gallipoli.
