Albert Henry Schwarz

Although known was Albert Henry Schwarz, his birth registration shows his name as Albert Heinrich Hermann Schwarz. Born at Swan Reach on the 5th October 1899, he was the son of August Benjamin Schwarz and his wife Johanna Maria nee Fiegert. He was “renamed” Albert Henry and was known as Sonny.

Sonny enlisted in Adelaide on 18 April 1917. On enlistment he is described as: age 21 years 6 months, labourer, height 5 feet 6 ¾ inches, fair complexion, blue yes, light brown hair. Religion: Methodist Next of Kin: father August Benjamin of Wanbi. Regimental number 3431

Unit was the 29/9th Light Horse and of the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. On 23 October 1917 disembarked from the HT Kyarra at Suez, and 4 days later arrived at Moascar and stayed in the Middle East region. Discharged 20 July 1919

On the 8 March 1922 he married Maud Ruby Lambert, known as Ruby, at the Payneham Methodist Church. His occupation is stated as farmer of Wanbi.

Sonny was allocated farm land at Kunlara in October 1926, where the family remained until the late 1930’s. They were involved in the community, with Sonny playing football for Galga and became a notable football umpire.

Ruby died aged 33 years on 11 July 1934. Sonny later moved to Croydon where he stayed until his death on 7th July 1976 aged 76 years. Buried at Enfield Cemetery.

Sonny and Ruby had three sons, two of whom served in WW2.
