Alan Percival Chittleborough was born in Walkerville South Australia, and attended a well-known private school St Peters College, where his name is listed on their honour board. He was born to Albert Bold Chittleborough and Alice Jane Roberts, on the 15th of July 1895.

Before enlistment, he worked as a Clerk reflecting a typical civilian occupation. He was 170cm (five foot seven inches) and 58kg (128lbs). He had a fair complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair and had a scar on his left leg which served as an identifying feature.

At the time of his enlistment, he was living in Gilberton on Gilbert Street in South Australia. He enlisted at the age of nineteen, on the 19th of August 1914, just after the war had started, making him an early volunteer, with the service number of 811.

When he left Australia on the 20th of October 1914, he had reached the rank of Corporal and joined the 10th Battalion of the Australian Imperial Force. After finishing training in Egypt, he moved to Gallipoli on the 25 April 1915. He remained there fighting from May-July of 1915, where conditions were harsh and dangerous. Then on the 6-10 of August 1915, Chittleborough fought in the Battle of Lone Pine, near Anzac Cove, where there were over 2,000 Australian casualties, showing the extreme intensity of the fighting. 

In July 1915 he was on detachment in Alexandria. He served in various locations throughout the Middle East until March 1916 when he moved to France to fight on the Western Front, in July of 1916 they fought in the Battle of Pozières, one of the most brutal battles for Australian soldiers.

At the beginning of 1917 Alan took leave in England for two weeks and rejoined his unit in France 8 February 1917. He became sick later that month with an infection and was hospitalised returning to his unit in April. In July he was attached to the 1st Anzac Corps School and was selected to attended Officer's Cadet School in Cambridge. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in February 1918. He preceeded overseas to France in April and was woundedin April followed by two more wounds received over the next 4 months. In July 1918 he was promoted to Lieutenant. He was invalided to England in August but soon after he recovered returned to France for the remainder of the war. 

He returned to Australia on the 22nd November 1919 and moved to Brisbane, Queensland.  On the 5th of January 1933 Chittleborough was married to Mildred Margaret Jessup in Toowong, Queensland. In 1942 he reenlisted at St Lucia Queensland, showing continued loyalty and commitment to service. he remained living in Queensland until his death in 1971, at the age of 76. [SU1]
