Biography contributed by Adelaide High School

Alan Llewellyn Read was born on January 13, 1895, in North Adelaide. After finishing his education at Adelaide High School, he worked as a Clerk. In 1915, he decided to join the Australian Imperial Force to support the war effort (Virtual War Memorial, 2024).

Read became part of the 7th Field Ambulance, a unit that provided medical care and evacuated injured soldiers under difficult conditions (7th Field Ambulance 2024). His dedication and hard work earned him the rank of Sergeant, showing his responsibility and leadership skills.

During his time in the military, he faced several difficulties. In 1917, he injured his foot, a problem made worse by the tough conditions on the battlefield. A year later, in 1918, he became ill.

He remains on the honour board at Adelaide High School and will forever be remembered.
