Biography

"BIOGRAPHICAL. PTE. W. M. SMYLIE.

Pte. W. M. Smylie, reported to have been killed in action, landed in Adelaide on June 17, 1912, from Belfast, Ireland, and went to the west coast for two months. He subsequently returned to Adelaide, and was engaged for a post on Momba Station, New South Wales. There he joined a camel team, and went to Broken Hill in November, 1913. He left the Barrier for a while to reside in Adelaide, but returned and was employed on a mine until August, 1914, when war was declared. He then proceeded to Adelaide and joined H Company of the 10th Regiment of Australian Infantry. He had many friends in Adelaide. A brother, who is in Germany as a prisoner, was a member of an Irish regiment. His mother resides in Belfast, Ireland." - from the Adelaide Register 15 Oct 1915 (nla.gov.au)
