BUXTON, Albert Ernest
Albert was employed as a Plasterer and lived with his parents in Lawrence Street Inverell before he enlisted in March 1916. He had attended Inverell Public School and been a member of the school cadets. As he was just underage, his father gave consent for Albert to enlist.
As one of the group of nineteen volunteers who left Inverell on 29 March 1916, he joined the 36th Battalion, 1st Reinforcement and sailed from Australia on HMAT A72 Beltana in May 1916. After further training with the 3rd Division in England he went to France where he was wounded in May 1917. Shortly after recovering and rejoining his unit Albert was transferred to the 9th Light Trench Mortar Battery. During July 1917 he was again wounded and sent back to England for treatment. He was returned to Australia in November 1917.
Private Albert Buxton is remembered at Inverell where his name is inscribed on the Honor Roll at the Memorial Swimming Pool.
