Thomas William Briggs was one of the four sons of Charles and Thurza Briggs of Brighton, Tasmania who enlisted in the AIF. Known as ‘Bill’, he was the only one to return, and he was twice badly wounded.
His eldest brother Charles was killed at Pozieres during 1916 and another brother Edwin was killed in action during March 1918.
Thomas William Briggs enlisted with his youngest brother Henry Bertie Briggs and they sailed overseas together. ‘Bill’ Briggs was wounded during October 1917. On the 8 May 1918, the 12th Battalion fought off a raid from the German lines near Strazeele in northern France. The unit was also heavily shelled. Both Briggs brothers were wounded, Henry dying of his wounds later the same day and ‘Bill’ was evacuated to England. His wound was serious and he was retained in England for early return, probably due to the fact that he had lost three brothers during the war.
