Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

68 years ago today, on the Saturday morning of the 27th February 1954, Lance Corporal Francis Edward Maloney, 30th Battalion (Reg No-492), also known as Pat, painter from Cleary Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 62 Donald Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 60. CATHOLIC 1-H Com. 19.

Born at Hamilton, New South Wales on the 21st May 1893 to John and Mary A Maloney, Pat enlisted July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 23.5.1916 (septic sores on hand), 1.9.1916 (pleurisy), 11.11.1916 (influenza), 12.7.1918 (otitis media - middle ear infection), Pat returned home September 1919, being discharged on the 7th November 1919.

Mr. Maloney’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled on the 23th May 1918, 372 names inscribed, 36 Fallen), Hamilton Mechanics' Institute Roll of Honour - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article137102184 and the Newcastle Operative Painters & Decorators Honour Roll – unveiled on the 17th February 1920, 16 names inscribed, 3 Fallen, whereabouts unknown.

There is no headstone to tell us of Pat’s service and sacrifice during The Great War, another Forgotten Digger, so March 2020 so I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Service record states Died after Discharge, 25.2.1954.
Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance.
Older brother John (34th Battalion, Reg No-491, born 1887, St Peters, N.S.W., died 1956, Balmain, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.
