Son of James Joseph Underwood and Helen Mary Underwood nee Bridger of Warbarton Road, East Camberwell, Victoria
Brother of Leo Underwood who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 while serving with the 22nd Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Panel 23 and James Augustine Underwood who returned to Australia on 17 July 1919 having served with the 6th Field Artillery Brigade.
On 12 May 1919 Charles married Nancy McCullock in Erskine Church, Glasgow, Scotland. James M. Brisby, Minister officiated
