Son of Edwin Charles and Sarah Bates of Gilles Plains. 2 brothers also enlisted; Sam Hubble Bates (10th Battalion) and Devonshire Holman Bates (50th Battalion), Harry was working at Manoora when he enlisted. He has no known grave and his name is listed on the Villers-Brettenoux Memorial
