Brief Biography

Denis Doyle came from a large family in Killorglin, County Kerry, Ireland. He was born on 24 January 1868, the sixth of fifteen children, seven girls and eight boys. One of the girls, a younger sister named Bridget (also known as Bridie), was my maternal grandmother. Denis married Hannah Kennedy in Brisbane on 5 April 1904. The marriage record states his occupation at the time was “Motor-man”. His age at the date of marriage was recorded as 32 years (actually 36) whilst Hannah was 37 years. Denis and Hannah had one child, Winnifred Gerard Doyle. Winnifred was born in Liverpool England and died in Brisbane on 7 November 1905 aged 9 months and 9 days from acute dysenteric diarrhoea.
Denis enlisted on 21 January 1916 aged 47 years as a Sapper in the 11th Field Company Australian Engineers. The unit trained at the Mitcham Camp in South Australia before embarking on 31 May 1916 from Outer Harbour Adelaide and disembarking at Plymouth England on 21 July 1916. The sea journey took them via Fremantle, Durban, Cape Town and St Vincent. Denis was discharged on 28 September 1917. His service record indicates he spent 9 months and 29 days with the unit in the field before he was invalided back to Australia.
Denis outlived Hannah by some six years before he died in Brisbane on 19 February 1951 and is buried at Nudgee Cemetery. His death record states that he spent 26 years in Queensland and 37 years in NSW which suggests he emigrated to Australia around the year 1888, at the age of approximately 20 years.
