Arthur John Thomas Biggs
Arthur John Thomas Biggs was born at Forest Range on the 19th August 1883.
Biggs worked as a miner. Prior to enlisting at Helena Vale in Western Australia
on the 19th October 1914, at the age of 31, he had served for 20 months with the
3rd New South Wales Bushmen in South Africa during the Boer War. During
World War One, Biggs {service number 240} served with the 10th Light Horse.
He listed his sister, Mrs C. Smith of Summer Hill, Sydney, as next of kin.
Biggs left Australia on the 16th May 1915 bound for Alexandria, Egypt. He was
sick throughout the latter part of August 1915. Biggs underwent treatment for
haemorrhoids in November and was hospitalised with mumps at Heliopolis on
16th January 1916, returning to duty on the 4th February.
Biggs was wounded in action at Rafa on the 9th January 1917, suffering severe
injuries to the abdomen and died the next day.
He was buried ¼ of a mile north-east of the village of Sheikh Zowoud and his
remains were later interred at Kantara War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt.
On the 12th March 1917, Biggs’ sister Mrs Charlotte Smith wrote to A.I.F Base
Records Melbourne, asking for information on where her brother served and
where he died. Charlotte’s desire to obtain such information stemmed from
being both Biggs’ next of kin and the eldest remaining member of the family
