Rowland Tidd Moile was born in 1861 in Sandhurst, Victoria. He was the son of Thomas Moile and Emma Bickmore. In 1883 he married Martha Beavis who died in 1885 at an early age. In 1887 he married Fanny Miller, the daughter of John Miller and Mary Shove. Rowland and Fanny had five children. Rowland enlisted in the AIF on 6 July 1915, some three weeks after his son Rowland Cyril had enlisted. His Attestation Paper showed his age as 45 years? He was in fact 54 years. In 1916 he was sent overseas and saw service in France. He was returned to Australia in !918 and discharged on 1 July 1918 due to his age! He lived to be 80 years.
