Biography

"Walter Percy Garland was born in Yass to Alice and Samuel Garland in 1897.  He was educated at the local Yass District School, and became a blacksmith, one of four blacksmiths who joined the Kangaroos.  A big strong 18 year old, he proudly carried the Yass Banner as the Kangaroos marched out of town.

After training, along with five other Kangaroos, Private Garland, Enlistment #3372, was transferred to the Kiama Depot where he embarked on the Honorata on 2 May 1916 as part of the 7th Reinforcements of the 30th Battalion.

Just one year after he enlisted in Yass he lay dying of his wounds in France.  His death is recorded as 20th December 1916 and he is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt l’Abbé in France.

The memorial service held in Yass for Private Garland was distinguished by the hanging of the Kangaroo special Banner presented by the people of Yass, and borne by Garland in December 1915.  The banner had been returned to Yass." - SOURCE (kangaroomarch.org.au)
